The Salon, Off-Broadway's latest new space, officially opens Sept. 22 with A Tale of Two Cities, a new stage adaptation of Dickens' classic novel of the French Revolution.

The Salon is located at 49 Bleecker Street, a historic cast-iron building formerly used as a lumberyard. The playing area spans 6,000 square feet and is topped by 16-foot ceilings.

The theatre will be the new home of The Culture Project, a company dedicated to literary adaptation. Past productions have include Christopher Isherwood's Prater Violet and Cruel and Barbarous Treatment, based on the stories of Mary McCarthy and John Cheever.

Will Pomerantz has adapted and will direct Tale. A cast of twenty - including Yusef Bulos, Tertia Lynch, Greg McFadden, Michael Pemberton, Toby Wherry and Rebecca Wisocky -- will embody Dickens' famous array of characters, among them the diabolical DeFarges and the feckless Sydney Carton.

Tale will be performed in two parts; Part I on Wednesdays and Fridays, Part II on Thursdays and Saturdays, and Parts I and II on Sundays. For information, call (212) 529-3670. -- By Robert Simonson
