Classic Arts News New Production of Das Rheingold Opens at Covent Garden A new production Das Rheingold opens at the Royal Opera tonight, in the first part of the company's new version of Wagner's Ring cycle, directed by Keith Warner.
Baritone Bryn Terfel makes his role debut as Wotan; music director Antonio Pappano conducts. All five performances through January 10 are sold out.

The staging features costumes by Marie-Jeanne Lecca, lighting by Wolfgang Goeggel, and sets by Stefanos Lazaridis, who replaced architect Daniel Libeskind after Libeskind and Warner clashed over the "imagery" of the cycle.

The cast also includes Philip Langridge as Loge, G‹nter von Kannen as Alberich, Franz-Josef Selig as Fasolt, and Philip Ens as Fafner. Rosalinde Plowright is Fricka, and Jane Henschel is Erde.

Die Walk‹re, the second part of the cycle, is scheduled for March, with Lisa Gasteen as Brunnhilde; Siegfried and G‹tterd‹mmerung are planned for 2005-06.
