The Public Theater's Musical Theater Initiative will present its first Songwriter Showcase, featuring numbers from dawning musicals, 7 PM Oct. 5 at Joe's Pub downtown.

Tony Award winner Ted Sperling (The Light in the Piazza), the respected music director and orchestrator, hosts the evening.

The showcase will feature singer-songwriter Valerie Vigoda performing excerpts from Ernest Shackleton Loves Me by Vigoda and Brendan Milburn; songs from the upcoming musical February House by MTI fellow Gabriel Kahane and Seth Bockley; and new work from the Jonathan Larson Award-winning team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. A second evening of the New Musical Theater Initiative will be presented at Joe's Pub Nov. 16.
