The Times Square Business Improvement District (TS-BID) and the NYPD have announced that southbound Seventh Avenue and Broadway will be closed at midnight Dec. 31 from 47th Street to 42nd Street.
The NYPD said that crosstown traffic on these streets would be open until it sets up its crowd "pen" which is formed by the ubiquitous portable metal railings and wooden sawhorses seen throughout the city.
Crowd development could alter this schedule and force for earlier closures.
In any case, the NYPD will be closing West 41st Street on Dec. 31 from Seventh to Broadway to set up a puppet staging area for the hourly midnight celebrations coinciding with other time zones.
On the afternoon of Dec. 31, the NYPD will close the cross streets from West 47th Street to West 42nd Street, as well as other streets north and south of 42nd Street on Seventh Avenue and Broadway as crowds dictate. Crowd sizes could also dictate street closures expanding to Sixth Avenue and Eighth Avenue .
