Classic Arts News   New York Philharmonic Gala to Provide a Glimpse of Gheorghiu's Tosca

The New York Philharmonic will mark New Year's Eve with a gala performance featuring soprano Angela Gheorghiu.

The concert will be seen around the country starting at 8 p.m. ET on PBS's Live From Lincoln Center, with Beverly Sills as host. Check local listings.

Gheorghiu is scheduled to sing a series of arias at the event, including "Vissi d'arte" from Tosca. The performance comes six months before Gheorghiu performs the iconic title role for the first time in a new production at Covent Garden (she has sung the role on film and CD, and performed excerpts in a Met gala in September).

Also on the program are arias from Puccini's Madama Butterfly and La Rondine, Verdi's La forza del destino, Catalani's La Wally, and Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana, as well as overtures and dances by Verdi, Rossini, Ponchielli. and Mascagni.

Philharmonic music director Lorin Maazel conducts.

As of yesterday afternoon, tickets were still available in some sections. Visit newyorkphilharmonic.org for more information.
