News New York Pops Season Kicks Off Oct. 17 with Bernstein Songbook The New York Pops, which was founded by Skitch Henderson in 1983, kicks off its 26th season at Carnegie Hall Oct. 17 with an evening titled The Bernstein Songbook.

The 8 PM concert is part of Carnegie Hall's festival commemorating the 90th anniversary of the late composer's birth. The evening features the talents of Broadway actresses Christiane Noll and Tony winner Lillias White as well as tenor Martín Solá, pianist Tomoko Ohno, jazz violinist Sara Caswell and special guest Phyllis Newman. The latter will perform "My New Friends," a tune written by Bernstein for Newman's one-woman Broadway show The Madwoman of Central Park West.

The New York Pops season will continue with New York Songs: A Love Letter to the City (Nov. 7 at 8 PM with Clint Holmes, Ashley Brown, Laura Bell Bundy and Linda Hart, among others), A King's Singers Holiday (Dec. 19 and 20 at 8 PM), The Music of James Bond (March 6, 2009, at 8 PM) and Once Upon a Time and Tomorrow: The Best of Charles Strouse (April 3, 2009, at 8 PM).
