Conductor and musician Wyn Davies has been appointed director of music at the New Zealand Opera.

Davies will take up the post, which is brand new, immediately, and will begin by conducting this season's Don Giovanni. He will continue to live in the U.K. and commute to New Zealand as his duties require.

Alex Reedijk, the opera company's general director, said in a statement, "Wyn Davies brings a wealth of international expertise and experience to the company and opera in New Zealand. We are delighted and privileged to have a musician of his high standing and depth join us."

Davies has previously served as staff conductor for Welsh National Opera, guest conductor for English National Opera, and assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera and Opera Banff of Canada.
