The Costa Mesa, CA, company announced its 44th season lineup June 6. Two world-premiere productions — one to play on the Segerstrom Stage, the other on the Julianne Argyros Stage — are yet to be announced.
The 2007-2008 season will also feature holiday runs of A Christmas Carol (Nov. 24-Dec. 24) and La Posada Mágica (The Magical Journey) (Dec. 7-23) as well as three Theatre for Young Audiences productions: Roald Dahl's The BFG (Big Friendly Giant), adapted by David Wood and directed by Anne Justine D'Zmura (Nov. 2-18); E. B. White's Charlotte’s Web, adapted by Joseph Robinette and directed by Shelley Butler (Feb. 8-24, 2008); and the world premiere of a SCR-commissioned new musical, Imagine by Doug Cooney with music by David O (May 30-June 15, 2008).
Also scheduled are the annual Pacific Playwrights Festival (May 2-4, 2008) and NewSCRipts 2007-2008 (presented Oct. 22, Dec. 3, Feb. 25 and March 31).
The 2007-2008 season (subject to change) follows:
Stefan Novinski directs the Hugh Wheeler and Stephen Sondheim musical, which centers on a "romantic tale played out over a long summer's night in Sweden at the turn of the century."
Bart DeLorenzo directs the new work by Donald Margulies "inspired by the true story of an unlikely hero who spellbound Victorian England with his incredible tale of survival." The work — commissioned by SCR — was presented at the 2007 PPF.
SCR artistic director Martin Benson stages John Patrick Shanley's 2005 Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning drama "about the tug-of-war between a young priest and a strong-minded nun at a Catholic school."
Timothy Douglas directs the West Coast premiere of Sarah Treem's "romantic comedy about a female musician who aspires to become a composer — but first must find composure in her love life."
Warner Shook directs Oscar Wilde's "comedy of manners," centering on two men "in love with two delectable young women, both of whom have illogically sworn to marry only men named Ernest."
Written and performed by the trio of Richard Montoya, Ric Salinas and Herbert Siguenza, the work brings the troupe's "unique blend of irreverent humor and poignant mosaic of life in America to SCR with a distinct Orange County point of view."
Art Manke directs the classic Alan Ayckbourn farce in which "men and women, attached and unattached, emerge from bedrooms above, mid-level and below, along a very crowded hallway."
