The Citations Wing of Chicago's Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee announced 71 nominations in 15 categories for the 2001-2002 29th Annual Citations season of non-union theatrical work in The Windy City.

TimeLine Theatre Company, CollaborAction and Shattered Globe Theatre lead Chicago's companies in nominations for non-union productions, with a total of eight, seven and six noms, respectively, it was announced April 22. The awards ceremony will be held June 10 at Park West.

Outstanding Production noms went to Eclipse Theatre's 2, Pyewacket's Boom Town, Stage Left's Chagrin Falls, TimeLine's The Crucible, CollaborAction's The Life and Times of Tulsa Lovechild, the musicals Pippin and Nine from Boxer Rebellion and Circle Theatre, respectively, and Shattered Globe's production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Steve Scott, associate producer of The Goodman Theatre and a veteran Chicago director, will serve as master of ceremonies. This year's program will again feature scenes from selected productions.

The Citations Wing of the Jeff Committee was created to recognize outstanding achievement in professional productions of Chicago-area theatres not operating under union contracts. During the 2001-2002 Citations season (April 1, 2001-March 31, 2002) the Jeff Committee judged 125 productions from 55 producing organizations. The committee recommended 48 productions from 30 producing organizations, and the final list of Citations nominations represents 30 productions from 25 companies. The awards are non-competitive, and multiple recipients may receive awards in each category. The 2001-2002 Citations Awards nominations go to:

Founded in 1968, the mission of the Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee is to honor excellence in theatrical productions in the Chicago theatre community. Originally chartered to recognize Equity productions, the non-Equity wing was founded in 1973 to celebrate outstanding achievement in non union Chicago theatre. Non-Resident award categories were established in 1992 in recognition of the contributions to Chicago theatre by non-local producing organizations. The 45 member Committee, composed of theatre professionals and enthusiasts, evaluates approximately 200 theatrical productions and holds two awards ceremonies each year. The Citations Awards, honoring outstanding achievement in non-union productions, are presented in early June. The Jeff Awards for excellence in Equity and Non-Resident theatre are celebrated in November. — By Kenneth Jones
