News Nine Librettist Kopit at Work on New Musical with Full Monty's Yazbek Arthur Kopit is busy at work with a new play and two new musicals, the librettist told Playbill On-Line at a press event for the upcoming production of his and Maury Yeston's Nine.

Among the projects currently on Kopit's plate is a musical called Tom Swift and the Secrets of the Universe with The Full Monty composer-lyricist David Yazbek. The tuner is based on the famous children's novel series by Victor Appleton. "It's not based on any one of the stories at all, but the characters. It's about invention." The busy bookwriter also mentioned working on the musical history Lewis and Clark with composer-lyricist Donald Alan Siegal. The tuner will set the American tale of explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to music.

Siegal, an alumnus of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, previously told Playbill On-Line (March 2002) that he was steered by composer Maury Yeston to Kopit, his Nine and Phantom collaborator. Lewis and Clark will feature as characters the two titular American explorers, as well as their female Indian guide, Sacagawea, and the others members of the "Corps of Discovery" which famously found its way to the Pacific Ocean in the early years of the 19th century.

Kopit has other musicals credited to his resume including High Society, BecauseHeCan and Road to Nirvana. Currently working on a play called Discovery of America, based on the journals of Cabeza de Vaca, Kopit is also known as a playwright for his works Indians, Wings (both Pulitzer Prize finalists) and Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma's Hung You in the Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sad.
