A reading of composer Polly Pen's latest opus, Night Governess, will be held Nov. 13 (8 PM) and 15 (3 PM) at Princeton, NJ's McCarter Theatre. Judy Blazer (Titanic ) and Emily Skinner (Side Show ) will star, along with Alma Cuervo, Jerry Lanning, Merle Louise, Jonathan Hammond, James Ludwig and Virginia Hart Pike.
Polly Pen's handiwork was last seen in New York when the Vineyard Theatre hosted an extended run in 1996 of her Bed and Sofa -- a musical adaptation of Abram Room's famous Russian silent film, which garnered an Obie Award. Pen first attracted attention with her debut piece, Goblin Market, in which she, for a time, also co-starred. Later, she penned both the music and lyrics for Christina Alberta's Father, winning a Richard Rodgers Award for her efforts. Throughout all, Andre Ernotte has been her director -- as he will be on Night Governess.
Governess is based on "Behind the Mask," a thriller by Louisa May Alcott. Pen is currently a resident artist at the McCarter.
Skinner made her mark in the last season's failed, but greatly lamented musical, Side Show, as one of a pair of Siamese twins. Blazer's other credits include Me and My Girl and A Change in the Heir. Cuervo is a Titanic veteran, while Lanning appearing in Broadway's 1776. Louise is best known for originated the roles of the Begger Woman in Sweeney Todd and Susan in Company.
