During 1998, fifty theatres presented more than 180 shows in Washington D.C. Now the theatre community is busy picking the best. Nominations for the 15th annual Helen Hayes Awards were announced Mar. 1 at a ceremony at the Canadian Embassy.

During 1998, fifty theatres presented more than 180 shows in Washington D.C. Now the theatre community is busy picking the best. Nominations for the 15th annual Helen Hayes Awards were announced Mar. 1 at a ceremony at the Canadian Embassy.

Signature Theatre leads the field with 22 nods for such productions as A Little Night Music, The Fix and Nijinsky's Last Dance. The "non-resident" Kennedy Center collected 15 nominations for housing such shows as Show Boat and Brothers of the Knight.

Awards will be presented in 22 categories, plus three special awards: the American Express Tribute, honoring lifetime achievement; the KPMG Award for Distinguished Service, given to an individual or organization lending "energy, ideas and leadership" to the theatre community; and the Washington Post Award, given to a person or organization for supporting DC theatre and/or "nurturing the creative spirit through educational programs. The Awards will take place May 3 at the Kennedy Center Opera House and be hosted by Tyne Daly (Mystery School, Gypsy).

Raymond Chretien, Canadian Ambassador to the U.S., told the assembled the number of Canadian plays presented by Washington theatres was "at an all-time high."

Last year the Shakespeare Theatre's production of Eugene O'Neill's Mourning Becomes Electra was the most-honored production, taking four of the awards, including Outstanding Resident Play. The national touring production of Chicago was named Outstanding Non-Resident Production. Major names among the winners were actors Anna Deavere Smith, Liz Larsen, Robert Prosky, L. Scott Caldwell and designer Jane Greenwood.
