Some crimp it, some spray it, some shave it. What's your Hairstory?
The unique relationship between people and their hair is celebrated in an original musical revue set to premiere Sept. 5-Oct. 5 at San Francisco's Theatre Rhino. The creation of actor-director Joari Jabir and playwright Doug Holsclaw, Hairstory will be directed by Jabir.
Set in Moxie's Make-Overs, a mystical beauty salon, Hairstory examines the historical, sexual and ethnic roles hair plays in the lives of men and women from childhood to adulthood. Holsclaw and Jabir developed the musical out of interviews with various ethnic groups, both sexes and several sexual orientations about their attitudes towards hair. Jabir's music in Hairstory covers a range of styles from gospel and soul to jazz and pop.
Hairstory features Kathleen Antonio, Jerry Van Carlos Gore, JoAnne Henry, Joe Langer, Henry Lee and Trent Morant.
