Nunsense A-Men! (Sorpresas), the new male version of the world famous Dan Goggin's musical, will open in Mexico City Oct. 15 at the Teatro Renacimiento, located at the Centro Teatral Manolo Fabregas.
The original female version of Nunsense was staged in 1991 at the Teatro Virginia Fabregas starring Marga Lopez (Gypsy, No No Nanette), Laura Luz (Singin' in the Rain, Moon Over Buffalo), Maru Dueñaz (Gypsy, Starlight Express) and Susana Zavaleta.
Now, in the male cast of Sorpresas are Patricio Castillo (Lend Me a Tenor), Miguel Pizarro (The Woman of the Year), Sergio Salvidar (recently seen as Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast), Sergio Catalan (The Fantasticks) and Ruben Cerda. Ricardo Ramirez directs and Fabiola La Rue choreographs.
The idea of a male version of Nunsense was proposed by a Brazil production of the show in 1995. The idea was such a success in that country that an Off-Broadway gender-switched revival of this musical comedy opened last June at Off Broadway's 47th Street Theatre, where it continues to run.
Fela Fabregas, owner of eight theatres in Mexico City and widow of the legendary actor-director-producer Manolo Fabregas; is producing Nunsense A-Men!, while her dazzling production of Crazy for You starring Manuel Landeta continues to run at the Teatro San Rafael, also located at the Centro Teatral Manolo Fabregas. Other Fabregas' venues include the Teatro Mexico, currently housing the Camacho-Jones erotic version of Dracula and the Teatro Fernando Soler, currently housing La Ronda de las Arpias, a thriller by Robert Thomas.
