News NYC's INTAR Quiets Its "Nuyorican Voices" as Three-Play Rep Run Ends April 22 Celebrating their 35th anniversary, the longest-running Hispanic theatre company in the country, INTAR, opened "Nuyorican Voices" at their space on 53rd Street in Manhattan March 13. The series which showcases three of contemporary Latino American theatre's renowned playwrights — Migdalia Cruz, José Rivera and Edwin Sánchez — will end its scheduled run April 22.

Celebrating their 35th anniversary, the longest-running Hispanic theatre company in the country, INTAR, opened "Nuyorican Voices" at their space on 53rd Street in Manhattan March 13. The series which showcases three of contemporary Latino American theatre's renowned playwrights — Migdalia Cruz, José Rivera and Edwin Sánchez — will end its scheduled run April 22.

The three plays which run in repertory each explore their own perspective on Latino culture in American life received their New York premieres. Miriam's Flowers by Migdalia Cruz, Giants have us in their books [sic] by José Rivera and Unmerciful Good Fortune by Edwin Sánchez are all directed by INTAR artistic director Max Ferra.

Cruz's Miriam's Flowers follows the sudden and violent death of the young son of a Puerto Rican family in Bronx. The boy's sister Miriam and mother find their own way to deal with the pain. (The play was originally written at INTAR's Playwright's Lab with Maria Irene Fornés.) Other works by Cruz include Yellow Eyes, El Grito and Fur.

Giants have us in their books, subtitled "Six Children's Plays for Adults, is written by José Rivera whose References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot starts March 20 at the New York Shakespeare Festival's Public Theatre. The plays were born of the idea of his four-year-old daughter who thought if giants are in our fairy tales, we must be in theirs. The sub-plays are titled Flowers, Tape, A tiger in Central Park, Gas, Crooked Cross and Winged Man. Rivera is also known for Marisol, Cloud Tectonics and Sueño.

Sánchez, whose recent play Icarus donned the stage at the Bank Street Theater, penned Unmerciful Good Fortune. The play centers around three present day Latina women — an assistant district attorney, a dying mother and a mass murderer — whose lives ultimately become crucial to each others. Other works by the playwright include Barefoot Boy With Shoes On and Clean. The company of actors includes David Anzuelo, Liza Colón-Zayas, Melissa Delaney DelValle, Michael Ray Escamilla, Yetta Gottesman, Alvaro Heinig, Carlos Molina, Jezabel Montero, Rolando Morales, Michelle Ríos, Nicolás Salgado and Liam Torres. The design team features Van Santvoord (sets), Sara Jean Tosetti (costumes), Ed McCarthy (lights) and Johnna Doty (sound).
