Summer is an adaptation of Edith Wharton's novel of the same name. In the story, a small town girl is suffocating in her turn-of-the-century New England town. The ward of a prominent local lawyer who has romantic designs on her, she longs to escape. Her wishes seem to be answered when a handsome city boy comes to town, and the two embark on a romance. But reality inevitably intrudes, the boy is lost, and, in the end, the girl is resigned to her fate.

Erik Haagensen wrote the book and lyrics, while Paul Schwartz composed the music. The musical received a 1998 Richard Rodgers Development Award.
