Cakewalk has proved not to be a cakewalk for Producer Julian Schlossberg, who will close the Off-Broadway production Jan. 5, 1997. Peter Feibleman's memory play about his relationship with Lillian Hellman has had a troubled New York production history, with several delays, an overhaul of the script and set, as well as a widely-rumored replacement of director Marshall W. Mason with ghost-director Mike Nichols, a friend of Hellman's.
The play stars Linda Lavin (who missed Dec. 11's matinee due to illness) and soap star Michael Knight.
Producer Schlossberg is currently negotiating to bring the play to London.
When Cakewalk closes Jan. 5 at the Variety Arts Theatre, it will have played 22 previews and 71 performances.
