In The Liar, Carlo Goldoni's best known work, a truth-shy con man passes through Italy, good-naturedly deceiving the public as he goes. Immediate Theater Company and Padraic O'Reilly took this comedy by Italian's Moliere and put it in the 1970's, creating Would You Lie to Me? Please? (Or how a charming stranger blows into Sheboygan, circa 1972 and turns everybody on, baby). Would You Lie to Me? plays Sept. 7-23 at Theatre 3.
Set in a small Wisconsin city known for its automobiles and sausages, Would You Lie to Me? Please? follows the adventures of a sweet, but lying drifter Lelio and his superego Arlecchino, who travel the American countryside avoiding Vietnam. In one crazy scheme involving the most respected and neurotic gynecologist in Sheboygan, Lelio is thrown into the lives of a leprechaun-hunting drunk, a suburban poet, a badminton player petrified of birdies and a checkers-obsessed Nixon.
Immediate Theater artistic director Jose Zayas directs. Would You Lie to Me? Please? stars Holt Bailey, Rhys Coiro, Christi Craig, Katherine Cunningham-eves, Morgan Davis Emily Frankovich, Michael LiDondici, Jason Mills, Corey Moosa, Victor Quinaz and Paul Siemens.
Tickets are $18. Theatre 3 is located at 311 West 43rd Street between 8th and 9th Avenues. For reservations, call (212) 358-5829. The Immediate Theater Company is on the web at http://www.theimmediatetheater.com.
