The York Theatre Company in Manhattan will present the songwriting team of John Kander and Fred Ebb with the 11th annual Oscar Hammerstein Award June 5.
The award commemorates lifetime achievement in the musical theatre and was created in 1988 by York's founding artistic director Janet Hays Walker. David Merrick, Stephen Sondheim, Stephen Schwartz, Harold Prince, Jerry Herman and Cy Coleman are past recipients.
A concert and dinner, benefitting the York, will include musical highlights from the works of composer Kander and lyricist Ebb. They penned Cabaret, Chicago, Woman of the Year, Zorba, 70, Girls, 70, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and more.
Their current project is a musical version of The Visit, which is to star Angela Lansbury in a staging slated for early 2001 on Broadway.
Tickets for the Oscar Hammerstein Award event range $125 $1000. Off-Broadway's York Theatre is devoted to presenting new, recent and classic musicals. For information, call (212) 935-5820.
