Expect them all and more when The Awesome '80s Prom, a new Off-Broadway interactive show that gets underway at Webster Hall on July 23. The six-week run is described as being in the audience-participation tradition of Tony & Tina’s Wedding and The Donkey Show. Performances are Friday Evenings only. Creator Ken Davenport presents the new piece, which takes audiences back to 1989, after Culture Club and Duran Duran's heyday, but before hip hop took over the airways. "Prepare yourself for a unique theatrical experience that will take you back in time - think `Pretty in Pink, `The Breakfast Club' . . . or any movie that featured Molly Ringwald!," reads press materials. "All your favorite characters from your favorite ‘80s movies are represented ...from the captain of the football team to the Asian exchange student, as we watch them all compete for Prom King and Prom Queen.. and just like `American Idol,' the audience gets to pick the winner!"
The cast features Alex Back, Courtney Balan, Sheila Berezan, Adam Bloom, Anne Bobby, Mary Faber, Emily McNamara, Troy Metcalfe, Jenna Pace, Amanda Ryan Paige, Mark Shunock, Josh Walden, Noah Weisberg, Brandon Williams, Simon Wong, Fletcher Young and associate director Rye Mullis.
Webster Hall, an East Village institution which once served as a dance hall and site of mass marriages, and has hosted the Obie Awards for the past several years, is located at 125 East 11th Street.
