Vanities, with music and lyrics by David Kirshenbaum, played a summer 2009 run at Off-Broadway's Second Stage Theatre in 2009.
Directed by Tony Award winner Judith Ivey, and featuring a book by Heifner, the 2009 production starred Lauren Kennedy, Sarah Stiles and Anneliese van der Pol, who sing on the recording.
The 15-track album was produced by Grammy-winning music producer Joel Moss. Bryan Perri is the musical director and conductor.
The recording includes liner notes by Melissa Rose Bernardo of Entertainment Weekly, a synopsis by playwright-book writer Jack Heifner, and all the lyrics by songwriter David Kirshenbaum, as well as full-color photos from the Off-Broadway production.

According to production notes, "Vanities: A New Musical traces the relationship of three friends, Mary (Lauren Kennedy), Joanne (Sarah Stiles) and Kathy (Anneliese van der Pol) as they transition from small town girls in Texas to college students and finally grown women with careers, children, marriages and conflicts."
The show was originally produced at TheatreWorks in Palo Alto, CA, in 2006. The musical won the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards for Best Score and Best Musical. An engagement at the Pasadena Playhouse in California followed.
