The new musical — which features book and lyrics by singer-songwriter Stew and music by Stew and Heidi Rodewald — played the Public's Anspacher Theater May 14-July 1. The entire original Off-Broadway company will transfer to Broadway, including de'Adre Aziza, Daniel Breaker, Eisa Davis, Colman Domingo, Chad Goodridge, Rebecca Naomi Jones and co-creator Stew. A band of musicians joins the cast onstage, including co-creator Rodewald, along with Jon Spurney and Christian Cassan.

Passing Strange was created in collaboration with Annie Dorsen, who directs; choreography is by Karole Armitage. The creative team also includes David Korins (scenic design), Elizabeth Hope Clancy (costume design) and Kevin Adams (lighting design).

The musical, according to press notes, "is the moving and hilarious story of a young black bohemian on a journey of escape and exploration that takes him from his middle-class, church-reared youth in South Central L.A. to the drug-laced world of sex in Amsterdam to the art and anarchism of Berlin — with a bevy of eye-opening experiences and life lessons along the way."

Stew and Heidi Rodewald are best-known for the Afro-baroque sound they created when they formed the band Stew. Their award-winning recordings include "Guest Host" and ""The Naked Dutch Painter."

The Broadway mounting of Passing Strange will be produced by The Shubert Organization, Elizabeth Ireland McCann and The Public Theater.

Performance schedule will be announced shortly; tickets will be available through Telecharge.

The Belasco Theatre is located in Manhattan at 111 West 44th Street.
