The immersive Off-Broadway staging of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street has recouped its $1.22 million capitalization in just 24 weeks, Variety reports. According to the report, though the running costs Off-Broadway are considerably higher than in London—where the show also had an acclaimed commercial run—tickets have been selling consistently in New York.
The acclaimed production, which welcomed a new title star last month, is currently selling through February 2018.
Directed by Bill Buckhurst, The Tooting Arts Club’s production of Sweeney Todd began previews February 14 at the Barrow Street Theatre prior to an official opening March 1. The downtown theatre has been completely transformed into a working pie shop for the show, which currently stars Hugh Panaro as Sweeney alongside Carolee Carmello as Mrs. Lovett.
Completing the cast are Jake Boyd as Anthony, Eryn LeCroy as Johanna, Michael James Leslie as Judge Turpin, John Rapson as the Beadle, Stacie Bono as Pirelli and the Beggar Woman, and John-Michael Lyles as Tobias.
The company of Sweeney Todd also includes Colin Anderson, Matt Leisy, David Michael Garry, Liz Pearce, Danny Rothman, and Monet Sabel.
