An opera based on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., opens tonight at the Germantown Performing Arts Centre in Memphis. The baritone Nmon Ford will play Dr. King.

The Promise, which both explores and celebrates the life of the civil-rights leader, was written by composer and University of Memphis professor Dr. John Baur in collaboration with the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music and University of Memphis Department of Theater and Dance.

"All of the elements for a great musical drama are there," Baur said of King's life. "Emotion, personal conflict, intense passion, social issues, tragedy, and triumph."
