Classic Arts News Opera Australia Announces Autumn Melbourne Season Opera Australia's upcoming Melbourne season will include the Australian premiere of a new production of Delibes' Lakm_, Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, Verdi's La traviata, and Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers.
Richard Hickox, Opera Australia's music director, opens the season on April 11 with the Glyndebourne Festival Opera's production of The Rake's Progress. Sets are by David Hockney; John Cox directs an Australian cast including John Heuzenroeder, Joshua Bloom, and Leanne Kenneally in their role debuts.

Elijah Moshinsky's production of La traviata returns to Melbourne on April 20. Nicholas Braithwaite conducts a cast including Joanna Cole as Violetta. Sets are by Michael Yeargan and costumes by Peter J. Hall.

Opera Australia's new production of Lakm_ premieres April 27. Adam Cook directs; sets are by Mark Thompson; Richard Bonynge conducts. Emma Matthews makes her debut in the title role. The company's production of The Gondoliers features Reg Livermore, Judi Connelli and John Bolton Wood; it will be conducted by Stephen Mould.
