Classic Arts News Opera Europa Appoints New President Bernard Foccroulle has been appointed president of Opera Europa, the organization announced.
Foccroulle, the director-general of the Brussels opera house La Monnaie, succeeds outgoing Welsh National Opera director Anthony Freud, who has been president for the last three years.

Opera Europa is a Brussels-based service organization for professional opera companies and opera festivals in Europe. It has increased its membership from forty to ninety-two members over the past three years.

The organization is preparing a "European Day of Opera" in 2007, which organizers hope will attract a large number of opera houses and media partners. Opera Europa's next conference, "Making the Case for Opera in the Community," will take place at Cardiff's Wales Millennium Centre March 3-5.
