Classic Arts News   Opera Reality Show Operatunity Goes to Australia

The reality-television series Operatunity, in which a major opera company stages a talent contest to find a new star, will have an Australian edition.

The winner of Operatunity Oz will perform with Opera Australia in a fully staged opera in late 2006.

The process of finding the new star, who must not be a professional singer or voice student, begins with a panel of judges including OzOpera artistic director Richard Gill. Television cameras will follow the participants' progress, including workshops and vocal, dramatic, and language coaching. The series will be broadcast on Australia's ABC network.

Operatunity premiered in 2003 on the United Kingdom's Channel Four. Singers were coached for a performance in Rigoletto with the English National Opera.
