Jo, Amy, Beth and Meg have something to sing about. PBS will broadcast the Houston Grand Opera’s production of Little Women Wednesday, Aug. 29 as part of its "Great Performances" series (check local listings). Composer Mark Adamo’s adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s 19th-century novel about four New England sisters coming of age premiered at the Houston Grand Opera in 1998. It was remounted in March, when it was taped for TV.

Stephanie Novacek (Jo), Joyce DiDonato (Meg), Margaret Lloyd (Amy) and Stacey Tappan (Beth) head the cast.

Adamo, meanwhile, is adapting another literary work about a group of hardy women for the Houston Grand Opera: His comic chamber opera based on Aristophanes’ satire Lysistrata is scheduled for the 2001-02 season.
