Two-time Obie winner Dael Orlandersmith takes her Monster to Seattle Jan. 18 for a run through Feb. 11 at A Contemporary Theatre's Bullitt. Richard E.T. White directs.

In Monster, Orlandersmith returns to the Harlem in which she was born and raised. A talented young woman named Theresa finds her way out of the ghetto she came from and into the rock 'n' roll world of the East Village. When she inherits her grandmother's house back in Harlem, however, she must decide if her new life or her old heritage defines her.

Orlandersmith won her Obies for Monster and Beauty's Daughter. Seattle audiences last saw her in 1999 in The Gimmick, the tale of successful African American writer Alexis' rise and her search for self through the help of a mentor named Miss Innes and the sad circumstances of her "discovered" painter friend, Jimmy.

Tickets are $10. A Contemporary Theatre is located at Kreielsheimer Place at the corner of 7th Avenue and Union Street. A Contemporary Theatre is on the web at http://www.accttheatre.org.
