This marks a return to the material for Hampton, who adapted the book into a Tony-nominated play and then into a film, earning him an Academy Award for Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium.

The TV drama is currently in development with the BBC.

Deadline reports that Hampton will return to the original novel and will not incorporate elements of his movie or stage adaptations into the TV show. The series will also be based on characters from other novels from the 18th-century French libertine literary movement.

Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' novel follows members of the French aristocracy who use love and sex as weapons in their games of humiliating fellow members of society.

The 1987 Broadway production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, starring Alan Rickman and Lindsay Duncan, received seven Tony nominations. The 2008 revival, which featured Laura Linney and Ben Daniels, received five Tony nominations, winning Best Costume Design of a Play.
