Elliot Goldenthal—Julie Taymor's longtime partner and collaborator—will work with the director once more on the Broadway revival of M. Butterfly.
Goldenthal will pen original music for the new staging, which will star Clive Owen. The composer won an Oscar for his work on the Taymor-helmed Frida, and also composed the 2006 opera Grendel and Juan Darién: A Carnival Mass, as well as music for Titus and The Tempest on screen and Theatre for a New Audience’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, all directed by Taymor.
The new production of David Henry Hwang’s drama will begin October 7 at the Cort Theatre (currently the home of Indecent), where it will officially open October 26.
The production will also feature choreography by Ma Cong, scenic design by Paul Steinberg, costumes by Constance Hoffman, lighting by Donald Holder, sound design by Will Pickens, wig and hair design by Dave Bova, and makeup design by Judy Chin.
The 1988 play follows the relationship between French diplomat Rene Gallimard (Owen) and a mysterious Beijing opera singer named Song Liling. The new staging will incorporate new material inspired by the real-life affair that inspired the play.
Additional casting will be announced at a later date.
