Bonus material on the DVD, which is presented in widescreen letterbox format, includes director Lee's backstage footage from the Broadway production. The disc has a suggested retail price of $24.98.

Passing Strange: The Movie, according to press notes, "tells the semi-autobiographical story of a young black man, identified simply as Youth, who leaves behind his middle-class, church-ruled upbringing in mid-1970s Los Angeles to travel to Europe in search of his artistic and personal identity, or what he calls 'the real.' Misadventures with sex, drugs, politics and art await him in uninhibited Amsterdam and hyper-militant Berlin, leading to a hard-won understanding of where he came from and where his life may take him."

The Broadway production received seven 2008 Tony Award nominations, including those for Best Musical, Best Actor (Stew), Best Featured Actor (Daniel Breaker as Youth) and Best Featured Actress (De’Adre Aziza in three roles). Stew won the Tony for Best Book.

Oscar nominee Spike Lee filmed the show's final three Broadway performances in front of live audiences. The cast included original stage stars Stew, Daniel Breaker, De’Adre Aziza, Eisa Davis and Colman Domingo. The production features original music (co-written by Stew and creative partner Heidi Rodewald), narrated and overseen by Stew.
