Longtime theatre critic John Lahr named the shows on the new list, which also includes two musical revivals (South Pacific and Gypsy) as well as a reading of Arthur Kopit's Discovery of America.

Here are the New Yorker's top choices for 2008:

  • Othello (Donmar Warehouse)
  • Macbeth
  • Endgame (BAM)
  • The Country Girl
  • South Pacific
  • Passion Play (Yale Repertory Theatre)
  • Pitmen Painters (National Theatre)
  • Gypsy
  • Discovery of America (Lincoln Center) Also of note to theatre folk: New Yorker writer Hilton Als included Carey Mulligan (Nina in The Seagull) and S. Epatha Merkerson (Come Back, Little Sheba) among "The Eleven Best Performances of Stage and Screen."
