The Penguin Repertory Theatre production of Mae West at the El Fey Club has been postponed until 1999, according to a message at the Stony Point, NY, theatre's box office. The show, which at one time starred Sally Mayes, was originally scheduled to run Nov. 22-Dec. 13. Penguin Executive Director Andrew Horn was not available for comment.
Mae West has had a troubled history. Sally Mayes, Tony nominated for She Loves Me, left in early November because of "artistic differences." She was replaced by Nora Mae Lyng, a veteran of Forbidden Broadway. As recently as Nov. 19, the show was scheduled to go forward.
Mae West, with songs by Ellen May Schwartz and Bonnie Lee Sanders and a book by Joe Brancato, is set in a New York nightclub the eve of West's departure for Hollywood, where she would become an internationally acclaimed star and sex symbol.
Don Goodspeed co-stars. Brancato is to direct. For information, call (914) 786-2873.
