Tony Award-nominated Legally Blonde composer O'Keefe collaborated with Emmy-winning Reefer Madness author Murphy on book, music and lyrics for the musical that played a March 15-Aug. 4 Off-Broadway run at New World Stages.
The musical arrived in New York following a sold-out 2013 Los Angeles premiere. It is based on the wickedly dark film comedy about a group of domineering high school girls, which starred Winona Ryder, Christian Slater and Shannen Doherty.
"Samuel French is home to some of the world’s greatest musicals and we are proud to welcome Heathers to our collection," executive director Bruce Lazarus said in a statement. "With a high-voltage score and deranged sense of humor, at its core it has something important to say about bullying, hazing and sexual harassment in schools. The show also has a huge and loyal fan base. At the Off-Broadway production, audiences dressed in costumes, yelled out dialogue and sang along with every song, reminiscent of the cult following of The Rocky Horror Show."
Here's how it's billed: "Based on the 1989 classic film, 'Heathers,' the musical is a retro-'80s romp into the scariest place of all: high school. At Westerberg High, jocks roam the halls, nerds cower in fear, and a trio of queen bees, 'The Heathers,' reign supreme. When misfit Veronica Sawyer rebels against the vicious clique, she unwittingly helps her new boyfriend – dark, sexy new kid, J.D. – with his ultimate plan: kill the cool kids. Darkly funny, sincere and moving, Heathers is the perfect show for the teen –and the teen angst – inside us all." For inquiries, contact Samuel French at (866) 598-8449 or visit samuelfrench.com.
