Peter Mills, who received a 2002 Jonathan Larson Foundation grant, penned book, music and lyrics for the show, which "explores the idealistic pursuits and follows the romantic entanglements of a group of childhood friends: a poet, a painter, a seminarian, the heir of Foxwood Hall, and their muse — the orphaned Anne Quintrell," according to production notes.

The show was "created" by Peter Mills and Cara Reichel and is presented by Prospect Theater Company (Cara Reichel, producing artistic director, Melissa Huber, managing director).

The Alchemists marks Prospect Theater Company's fourth original production by collaborators Peter Mills and Cara Reichel. Previous productions include Illyria, The Flood and The Taxi Cabaret.

Cara Reichel directs. Music direction is by Daniel Feyer, with set design by Scott Aronow, costume design by Sidney J. Shannon and lighting design by Ji Youn Francesca Chang.

The cast includes Kelly Snyder, Benjamin Eakeley, Damian Long, Tony Valles, Blake Hackler, Danielle Melanie Brown, Jordan Wolfe, Joshua Marmer, Seamus Boyle, Jonathan Demar, Richard Todd Adams, Larry Brustofksi, Piper Goodeve, Carol Hickey, Peter Maris, Marc Mortiz and Navida Stein. Performances play Theater for the New City, 155 First Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets. Performances play 8 PM Thursdays-Saturdays and 3 PM matinees Sundays (with additional 8PM performances Monday May 12 and Wednesday May 14).

Director Reichel recently directed productions for Prospect Theater Company including Dido (& Aeneas), The Taxi Cabaret, Danton's Death, Twelfth Night, The Flood and Illyria, and, for the Gallery Players, The Most Happy Fella.

Mills holds an MFA in musical theatre writing from New York University's Tisch School for the Arts. He wrote book, music, and lyrics for The Taxi Cabaret, which was produced in the spring of 2000 at the Duplex Cabaret Theatre in New York City and subsequently featured in the Berkshire Theatre Festival's new musicals series. With Cara Reichel, he wrote book, music, and lyrics for The Flood, which premiered May 2001 at the Flamboyán Theatre in New York. The Flood was selected for the 2001 ASCAP Musical Theater Workshop. Last spring, his musical adaptation of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, Illyria, completed a successful run at the Hudson Guild Theater in Chelsea.
