Classic Arts News Peter Schneider to Conduct Met Parsifal Peter Schneider, the chief conductor of the Bavarian State Opera, will conduct the Metropolitan Opera's production of Wagner's Parsifal in May, stepping in for the injured James Levine.
The company has now announced substitute conductors for all of Levine's planned appearances this spring except for a production of Wagner's Lohengrin, which runs April 17-May 6. The Met music director suffered a torn rotator cuff in a fall on March 1 and has been sidelined for the rest of the season.

Parsifal will be seen on May 12, 15, and 18. The cast includes Waltraud Meier as Kundry, Ben Heppner as Parsifal, Thomas Hampson as Amfortas, Nikolai Putilin as Klingsor, and Ren_ Pape as Gurnemanz. Otto Schenk is the director.

Schneider made his Met debut in 1995, leading Die Zauberfl‹te, and returned in 2002 for Fidelio. He has led the opera companies of Bremen and Mannheim, Germany, and has conducted at Bayreuth and the Vienna State Opera.
