Three plays based on the Phaedra myth (the queen of Athens falls in love with her stepson) are being staged. These will include a traditional translation of Racine's 17th century text, followed by a reinterpretation of the play as a modern cross between "Dynasty" and film noir, and finally Sarah Kane's Phaedra's Love, a wild, avant-garde romp version of the story. The cast for all three plays includes Danny Bernardy, Jennie Hahn, Jim Kane, Christina Lind, Susannah Melone, and Gregory Waller. One Year Lease, the international theatre company that is producing, took its six-actor ensemble to the mountains of Northern Greece last summer to rehearse.
Founded in 2000, the New York-based theater company is dedicated to revitalizing classic texts. They have created a community of American and international artists who work together on productions that are performed both in the United States and abroad. Recent productions include Machinal, Look Back in Anger, Oresteia, Antigone, and Miss Julie.
Tickets are available at $15 for one performance, $25 for two, and $35 for all three. The Studio at The Cherry Lane Theatre is located at 38 Commerce Street. Visit www.oneyearlease.org(http://www.oneyearlease.org) for the performance schedule.
