Van Bergen has worked at the St. Louis Symphony for the last five years, most recently as vice president and director of artistic administration. She replaces Simon Woods, who stepped down after seven years in March to become the president of the New Jersey Symphony.
At the Philadelphia Orchestra, van Bergen will work with music director Christoph Eschenbach on concert programming and will oversee tours, education, and other artistic initiatives. She is trained both in music and business, having graduated from the Eastman School of Music with a violin degree and from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.
"I am extremely pleased that Kathleen van Bergen is bringing her knowledge and experience as an accomplished musician and her success as an artistic administrator to the Philadelphia Orchestra," said orchestra president Joseph Kluger in a statement.
