In the film, Hoffman will play the role of Plutarch Heavensbee, head gamemaker for the Hunger Games; the actor was officially offered the role last month. According to the Hollywood Reporter, an offer has also gone out to Jena Malone, who was seen on Broadway in Doubt, to play the role of Johanna Mason.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" follows Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), who returns home after winning the 74th annual Hunger Games with fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). Francis Lawrence will direct "Catching Fire," which plans to begin production in September.

Hoffman, who was also Tony-nominated for his performances in Long Day's Journey Into Night and True West, won the Oscar in 2006 for his performance in "Capote." He received Oscar nominations for "Charlie Wilson's War" and "Doubt." His other film credits include "The Big Lebowski," "Mission: Impossible III," "Moneyball" and the upcoming films "The Master" and "A Late Quartet," among others.
