Italian operatic soprano Maria Callas was born on December 2, 1923. Playbill.com celebrates Callas and takes a look back at some of the leading ladies who have portrayed her in Terrence McNally's Master Class over the years.
The original Broadway production opened at the John Golden Theatre November 5, 1995, and ran for nearly 600 performances. The cast featured Zoe Caldwell, Audra McDonald, Karen Kay Cody, Michael Friel, David Loud and Jay Hunter Morris. The production took home three Tony Awards, including Best Play and acting honors for Caldwell and McDonald.
Patti LuPone and Dixie Carter succeeded Caldwell in the Broadway company, and Faye Dunaway headlined the national tour. Tyne Daly starred in Broadway revival at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in 2011.
