On September 20, 2004, many of Broadway’s biggest names participated in a sold-out concert performance of the cult musical Hair, with all proceeds benefiting the Actors’ Fund of America. The concert was such a success that a CD recording was released on June 16.

The landmark musical is considered to be the original rock opera, pre-dating others such as Godspell, Jesus Christ Superstar and The Who’s Tommy, and paving the way for an innovative new type of musical to run on Broadway. At left, Nine’s Sara Gettelfinger and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’s Jesse Tyler Fergusen are seen at the release party. Below, Catherine Cooke and musical director Seth Rudetsky celebrate the album’s release at Kemia Bar on Ninth Avenue and West 42nd Street in New York City.
