At left, the cast is seen giving their opening night bow. The play, by Nilo Cruz and directed by Emily Mann, takes place in a cigar rolling factory in Tampa, Florida. It recounts the tale of the workers in the family-run factory and how all of their lives are affected by the arrival of Juan Julian, a lector, hired in the grand Cuban tradition, to read to the workers while they roll their cigars.

Anna in the Tropics is directed by Emily Mann, with settings by Robert Brill, lights by Peter Kaczorowski, costumes by Anita Yavich, and sound by Dan Moses Schreier. The production at the Royale Theatre was originally produced at the McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton, New Jersey. The cast was the same and includes; Jimmy Smits, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Victor Argo, Vanessa Aspillaga, John Ortiz, David Zayas, and Priscilla Lopez.
