Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters stopped by P.S. 111 the afternoon of May 26 to read her new children's book and perform for a group of first graders. The appearance was part of the city's Learning Leaders Great School Volunteer Week.

The book, titled "Stella Is a Star," features text by Peters and illustrations by Liz Murphy. Included is an audio CD on which Peters performs "Stella's Song," which she composed. "It's about a pit bull, but no one likes her, so she masquerades as a pig of the highest order," Peters recently told "She calls herself 'Princess Pig,'" Peters said with a laugh.

"It's a great story about not judging people from the outside, and not being afraid to accept and love yourself for who you are," Peters added.

Here is a look at the afternoon reading held at the Manhattan school:

Great School Volunteer Week "demonstrates the impact of well trained volunteers in fostering student success in our public schools."
