News PHOTO CALL: Daniel Radcliffe Stars in Martin McDonagh's The Cripple of Inishmaan Michael Grandage's new West End production of Martin McDonagh's The Cripple of Inishmaan, starring Daniel Radcliffe in the title role, opened June 18 at the West End's Noel Coward Theatre, following previews that began June 8, for a run through Aug. 31.

The production marks the third in the Michael Grandage Company's resident season at the Noel Coward Theatre, following Privates on Parade and Peter Morgan's Peter and Alice. It is the play's first major London revival since its premiere at the National Theatre in 1996. It was seen Off-Broadway at New York's Public Theater in 1998 and in a production at Atlantic Theatre Company in 2008.

In the play, set on the remote island of Inishmaan off the west coast of Ireland, word arrives that a Hollywood film is being made on the neighbouring island of Inishmore. The one person who wants to be in the film more than anybody is young Cripple Billy, if only to break away from the bitter tedium of his daily life. According to press materials, the play examines an ordinary coming of age in extraordinary circumstances.

Daniel Radcliffe, who is best known for playing the title role in all eight films in the "Harry Potter" series, last appeared onstage headlining the Broadway revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and before made his West End debut in Equus in a production that subsequently transferred to Broadway, in which he starred opposite the late Richard Griffiths.

Radcliffe is joined in the company by Ingrid Craigie, Pádraic Delaney, Sarah Greene, Gillian Hanna, Gary Lilburn, Conor MacNeill, Pat Shortt and June Watson.

The production is designed by Christopher Oram, with lighting by Paule Constable and music and sound design by Alex Baronowski.
