News PHOTO CALL: Donna McKechnie Dons Smithsonian Gypsy Robe May 10 The Gypsy Robe is one Broadway's great traditions. Every opening night of every show on Broadway, the Gypsy Robe arrives at the theatre before the audience does to be presented to the actor or actress in the show who has the most Broadway credits. Usually that person is a gyspy, one of Broadway's chorus members who fill out the ensemble instead of the lead roles. After the Gypsy Robe, donned by the cast member with the most credits, is run around the stage and through the theatre - all for good luck - the show decorates the robe and signs it before their gypsy carries it to the next opening show.
