Fun Home is based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Alison Bechdel. Alison, who is a big fan of Windsor's but was unable to attend the event, created an illustration for Windsor with a personal note thanking her for paving the way for LGBT rights. The illustration was presented to Windsor by Jeanine Tesori and Lisa Kron. Fun Home is described as "a fresh, daring new musical based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Alison Bechdel. When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father's hidden desires." The cast features Beth Malone (Alison), Sydney Lucas (Small Alison) and Alexandra Socha (Medium Alison) as author-narrator Bechdel at various stages of her life. It also stars Tony Award winner Michael Cerveris as her father, Bruce Bechdel, and Tony nominee Judy Kuhn as her mother, Helen Bechdel. Completing the cast are Griffin Birney (John Bechdel), Roberta Colindrez (Joan), Noah Hinsdale (Christian Bechdel) and Joel Perez (Roy).
