The Hairspray finale takes place on the set of "The Corny Collins Show," illuminated by the back wall of David Rockwell's set, purposefully designed to resemble a gigantic Lite-Brite.

Hairspray is set in 1962 Baltimore, where the girl with the biggest hair and the best moves can obtain fame on the city's number one dance revue, "The Corny Collins Show." Plain Jane Tracy Turnblad (Marissa Jaret Winokur) defeats the show's reigning queen, Amber Von Tussle (Laura Bell Bundy), but then the girl's evil parents want revenge. Turnblad's own parents (played by Dick Latessa and Harvey Fierstein), however, are there to make sure Tracy stays on top. Hairspray opens its pre-Broadway run at Seattle's Fifth Avenue Theatre June 14 for a run through June 23. The Marc Shaiman-Scott Wittman-Mark O'Donnell-Thomas Meehan tuner is then expected at Broadway's Neil Simon July 18 for an opening Aug. 15.
