News PHOTO CALL: John Hurt, Gary Oldman, Eric Idle, John Glover at Krapp's Last Tape L.A. Opening The Gate Theatre Dublin's production of Samuel Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape starring John Hurt opened Oct. 10 in a Los Angeles run through Nov. 4 at Center Theatre Group's Kirk Douglas Theatre.

Beckett's 1958 play, a "searing meditation on the choices made in a lifetime," is directed by the Gate Theatre Dublin's director Michael Colgan. The play, according to CTG, "takes place on Krapp's 69th birthday, when he continues his ritual of making a tape recording of his thoughts about the year just passed and listening to his taped thoughts on years gone by. For this birthday he chooses a tape made 30 years earlier, and with a mixture of regret and disgust, he hears his youthful voice, full of strength and bravado, talk about his aspirations and the woman he loved."

Hurt attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art after studying Fine Art at St. Martins. For the Gate Theatre, he has previously appeared in Krapp's Last Tape, Afterplay and London Vertigo. He has appeared in over 100 films including "Alien," "Midnight Express" (Academy Award nomination for his performance), "The Elephant Man" (Academy Award nomination), "1984," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" and more.

Krapp's Last Tape features lighting design by James McConnell. The company stage manager is Catherine Buffrey and the stage manager is Michelle Blair. Beckett (1906-1989) is the author of the modern classics Waiting for Godot (1953), Endgame (1957) and Happy Days (1961), among others. In 1969 Beckett won the Nobel Prize in Literature for his plays, books and other writings. In March-April of this year, CTG presented a critically acclaimed production of Waiting for Godot at the Mark Taper Forum. It starred Alan Mandell and Barry McGovern.
