The production (formerly titled Cotton Club Parade, was conceived by Tony Award winner Jack Viertel that played two engagements at New York City Center opened on Nov. 3, 2013, at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. The new musical reintroduces the Cotton Club's tradition of welcoming the stars of today in limited engagements throughout its run.
Lang, who makes her Broadway debut with the production, plays through March 9 and will be followed by Grammy Award-winning artists Toni Braxton and Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds (March 18-30).
Lang's album "Absolute Torch and Twang" garnered the artist her first Grammy Award and mainstream recognition. She followed with a contemporary album "Ingénue," which featured the hit "Constant Craving" and went platinum in Canada and the U.S. She is known for her interpretations of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and Roy Orbison's "Crying." Lang has collaborated with such artists as Orbison, Bonnie Raitt, Elton John, Loretta Lynn and Tony Bennett. Her most recent album is entitled "Sing It Loud." After Midnight marks the Broadway debut of fashion designer Isabel Toledo (costumes), who is known for creating Michelle Obama's first inauguration day dress. Ruben Toledo is an award-winning artist who renders all of Isabel's designs and is the author of "Style Dictionary."
"Cues from the past inspire us to create something new and singular," said Toledo in a previous statement. "The opportunity to delve into the theatre world via the sultry innovative nightlife scene of the jazz age was too tantalizing to pass up. Jazz is deeply entrenched in my creative process, it all starts with rhythm."
After Midnight is produced by Scott Sanders Productions, and Wynton Marsalis, in association with Marks-Moore-Turnbull Group; Stephen and Ruth Hendel; Tom Kirdahy.
